Different base types have different features and it can be tiring to choose one that suits you best. And to learn all the terms related to the toppers can be a daunting task. In this blog, we have gathered some common terms that frequently used on today’s hair topper market. Hope them can be helpful to you.

From the manufacturing technology aspect, there are two types of toppers : Wefted & Hand-Tied.

Wefted

Wefted toppers are the most affordable on the market, and are more likely to be made with synthetic hair. The hair of the wefted section is not hand-tied. The wefted section is made up with the hair wefts seamed by the machine.  

Some toppers are part monofilament/lace/silk base, part wefted. The monofilament/lace/silk base is placed in the centre where the hair can be parted and the wefted part is placed around the edge of the monofilament/lace/silk base.

Hand-tied

The hair on hand-tied toppers are sewn by hand one strand by one strand, very time-consuming. So hand-tied toppers are normally more expensive than the wefted ones. Hand-tied toppers has a more natural look and a lighter weight, allowing easy styling and parting of the hair.

Base Types:

Swiss lace cap(Hand-tied)

The hair strands are hand-tied into the lace material one strand by one strand. The hair injected through the lace base, giving an illusion look that the hair is growing out of the scalp, very natural. Compare to mono cap, lace cap is much softer, but to the degree of holding the shape, mono cap is much better than lace cap. The price of mono and lace cap is almost the same.

Mono base cap (Hand-tied)

The hair strands are hand-tied into the lace material one strand by one strand. The hair injected through the lace base, giving an illusion look that the hair is growing out of the scalp, very natural. The hair can be parted and brushed in any direction and can move just as natural hair moves. Compared to other base materials, mono base is more durable, can last much longer.

Double mono base cap(Hand-tied)

The double monofilament topper feels softer than the single monofilament topper. It has an additional layer on the bottom of the monofilament layer which can protect your scalp from the hand-knotting. As the name suggests, double monofilament can mean double the comfort, providing a luxuriously soft silky feel against the skin.

Silk base cap

Silk base topper is the most expensive and realistic on the market. Luxurious and popular. The base is made from a piece of silk fabric and a piece of lace fabric ( one on top and one on bottom ). When the hair is knotted, the knots below the silk are concealed between the layers. The hair is then injected through the silk material. If you check the hair from top, you will see, the hair seems grow from your own scalp, and the knots are virtually 100% invisible.

Other terms:

Lace front

Some toppers have a mixed base construction to combine the pros of different materials. Toppers with lace front is ideal for those suffering from hair loss toward the front of the scalp and like to have natural looking hairline. When worn properly, the lace front topper can give you an undetectable look.

Bondable

To some beauty who may suffering from severe hair loss and want to bond the topper onto the head rather than using clips, then toppers with bondable feature would be the perfect choice. Bondable topper cap is made with a material than can be bonded to the head using tapes or adhesive.

PU

Some toppers have an outer edge strip of PU around the perimeter. This is for users who feel clips are not that comfortable, and they want to remove the front or side clips with the help of PU perimeter. With PU strip, it can largely prevent the topper from slipping or falling off.

Knots

At the roots of a topper, there are knots. Knotting is the process that carried out when a hair topper is made to secure the hair strands to the base. There are single knots, double knots and hidden knots.

Single knots are achieved when a strand of hair is secured to the base by tying one knot. Single knots are invisible and give a more natural appearance. With single knots, the hair can be very flat. Single knot hair toppers are less durable than double knot hair toppers and are more prone to shedding.

Double knots are achieved when a strand of hair is secured to the base by tying two knots. Double knots are a bit more durable than single knots, but are less natural-looking as they’re larger and more visible. If your hair topper is knotted with double knots, just try to keep people from looking at it too closely.  

Hidden knots are achieved when hair is hand tied into a silk base. Because the knot is hidden between the two layers it becomes invisible, making it look as if the hair is growing out of the scalp.
